Movers&shakers:

In 2008, Sharmadean Reid, founder of WAH Magazine had the idea to open up her own nail salon — though not your average nail salon but one where you could have “whatever you want on your fingertips”.

“On August 1st 2009, WAH Nails opened it’s doors in the East End of London to a raptuous reception from the press. A trickle of nail art fans turned into a flood of customers as WAH became the go-to salon for fashion forward nails.”

WAH Nails has since opened two more locations, paints nails at fashion events, parties, store openings, festivals, etc. “All in the name of happy nails.”

the need for rebellion

Manuela Pavesi: “I don’t like riches that aren’t accompanied by thought, and I don’t like bourgeoisie if it becomes narrow-minded and uncultured. I like mystery; I don’t like affection. All those things that come from it don’t interest me. People feel safe in affection. And I’m always looking for, and intrigued by, content. I love the unconventional and I’m always looking for it.” - interviewed in Self Service Spring/Summer 2012

A little birdie dropped this off in our inbox this morning — more goodies from Nordstrom’s for their Designer Collections this spring.

Really dig this video!

what’s in a name?

In thinking about branding, especially for our start-up clients, we recently raised this question of — what is in a name?

This is an imperative question, rather rhetorical, with many answers. We thought it would a be good idea to slowly chip away at this monster query and revisit it as we come across interesting information surrounding this idea.

Naming your brand should definitely be at the top of your priority list when launching a new company or line. The important thing to always keep in mind is that “the name of your company is your first point of contact with the outside world, a constant advertisement, and the thing consumers and clients alike are going to be attracted to or repulsed by” - Innovation Magazine.

inspiration / evolution

In thinking about product styling and art direction, it’s helpful to reference the archives and draw new inspiration from the old. It’s what you do in art — whether you reference the work to avoid repeating certain aspects or build a new idea around a particular detail. Creative work is ever-evolving.

the new nordstrom

Ashley recently blogged these photos of the latest Nordstrom catalogue… We had to second her post as we were just as pleasantly surprised when we saw it! It’s pretty exciting to see these kind of collaborations happening at Seattle-based Nordies. Catalogue photographed by Ezra Petronio of Self Service Magazine.
